Accreditation

Is the HICAT course accredited?

Short answer: YES!

Long answer: Industry recognition and approval are crucial for Holistic Practitioner training courses. Many holistic and complementary therapy modalities, such as Yoga, Holistic Counselling, Meditation, and some Holistic Arts Therapies, fall outside government training frameworks in most countries.

To address this, many governments have opted for industry regulation of these modalities. Contrary to popular belief, these practices are not unregulated but are overseen by industry bodies.

Practicing as a therapist or practitioner in these fields requires industry recognition, along with professional indemnity and liability insurance.

There are two types of associations:

  1. Modality-based Associations: These associations are often owned by the same entities that run training colleges in the specific modality. They focus exclusively on that particular therapy and typically accept members who have graduated from their own courses. While this is not inherently problematic, it’s important that such associations offer transparency, value, and support for their members. The courses should not be accredited solely by these associations, as this could indicate that the college established the association merely to endorse its own courses. These associations often restrict approval to a particular style, technique, tradition, or lineage within the therapy.

  2. Industry-based Associations: These associations are independent and not affiliated with any training colleges. Their primary goal is to protect consumers and uphold the standards of Holistic and Complementary Therapies. They may provide training and professional development opportunities but do not require members to participate. These associations accept members from a diverse range of therapeutic modalities and are focused on the overall quality, educational content, course outcomes, and the integrity of the course providers. They employ a rigorous approval process for training courses, ensuring high standards are maintained across the industry.

Legal Titles and Laws

In many countries, titles for certain modalities are protected. Mind Body Education graduates from all courses can obtain insurance, join professional associations and practice legally using the following titles.

In Australia and New Zealand, graduates of the Holistic Integrated Creative Arts Therapy Practitioner Training Course can use the title HICAT practitioner, Holistic Integrated Creative Arts Therapy Practitioner, Creative Arts Facilitator, or Creative Therapist. In the USA, Canada and the UK, graduates of the Holistic Integrated Creative Arts Therapy Practitioner Training Course can use the title Creative Arts Facilitator.

Art Therapists in the UK must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which is the statutory regulator of the profession. ‘ The Holistic Integrated Creative Arts Therapy Practitioner Training Course’ is not an HCPC-approved program and completing the course will not lead to graduates being able to register as Art therapists or to provide Art Therapy in the United Kingdom. Graduates of the HICAT Course are not Art Therapists; they are Holistic Integrated Creative Arts Therapy (HICAT) practitioners.

HICAT is a modality that uses a wide range of creative Arts that enable people to connect with the creator inside themselves. HICAT is empowering and does not require an ‘expert’ to interpret the finished piece or monitor the creative process in any way. All that is needed is an open heart that can hold a safe space to share beautiful, gentle, creative tools.

Graduates of our HICAT program in Australia and New Zealand possess the legal authority to practice as Art Therapists and can utilise titles such as Holistic Art Therapist or Art Therapist. Membership with ANZACATA is not a mandatory requirement for Holistic Art Therapists to practice. ANZACATA operates as a not-for-profit company limited, and the field of art therapy in Australia and New Zealand is self-regulated.
